About our project

The reason that we went into healthcare as doctors, nurses, administrators and a myriad other roles is to help people live longer, better lives. At Alameda Health Systems, in the San Francisco East Bay, we serve a large “at risk” population. A vital part of the urgent and long-term care we provide is our Health Excellence & Academic Leadership program called HEAL.

Health Excellence & Academic Leadership (HEAL) is a multifaceted youth development program designed to prepare students beginning in the eighth grade through college, for a future as a health care professional.

Beginning in 1991, originally known as the Model Neighborhood Program, HEAL recruits youth from some of the most medically underserved and ethnically diverse areas in Alameda County; including Oakland, Hayward, San Leandro, and Newark. The program operates under the Ambulatory Health Care Services at Alameda Health System, one of the nation’s most comprehensive medical networks.

HEAL provides education and psychosocial support to “at-risk” students in 15 East Bay schools. The program provides paid and unpaid internships, seminars on workforce development, public health, life coaching, and introduction to health care professions to 130-150 public school students per year. Opportunities are designed and implemented according to best practices in adolescent health and wellness, youth leadership development, link learning and career training. Students exit with career goals, certificates of completion, a network of potential supervisors in career pathways, and most importantly, self-confidence.

Giving Something to Get Something

Educational and community-based programs play a key role in:

  • Preventing disease and injury.
  • Improving health.
  • Enhancing quality of life.

The HEAL program seeks to prevent disease and injury, and improve health by educating young men and women on the pressing health issues that exist within their community. These students are then empowered to educate their families and peers with this knowledge, leading to a healthier community.

Strengthening the community is more than fighting disease and improving health. HEAL invests in young people from our community, towards the end of providing them and their families a better quality of life.

We develop a bridge from the classroom to work. We provide them opportunities to connect with professionals who give insight on the requirements to have a healthcare career. HEAL provides students with academic support, ranging from tutoring to life skills training. In this effort we help to build a better tomorrow by engaging these young people and their families today.
