About our project

The Breast Cancer Checklist book is an easy-to-use guide with checklists for what to do before, during, and after surgery, chemo, and radiation.

It was the book I needed and never found when I was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago. The lists include tips I found crucial that often slipped through the gaps in my care.

This book aims to empower women and make them feel that they are doing everything in their control to manage their care while giving them one resource to rely on.

The Breast Cancer Checklist Project

The Breast Cancer Checklist is a book that includes everything from medical to practical advice: checklists for before and after surgery, lumpectomy, mastectomy, reconstruction, chemo, radiation, infusion ports, lymphedema management, tamoxifen, Herceptin, Triple-Negative, and prostheses. It assists women in working through treatments, organizing their medical and insurance records, and keeping track of menu planning and clothing purchases. It even has lists of free gifts and vacation opportunities available to survivors, and much much more.

This book is based on the results and conclusions of over 700 medical studies, but was written for people in conversational manner.

It includes tips such as:

  • Get a dental appointment before you start treatment after which you’ll be immuno-compromised.
  • Schedule your surgery for the second half of your menstrual cycle, which evidence has shown improves outcomes.
  • Talk to your child’s teachers so they’re alert for mood swings or special needs.
  • On plane flights, wear a compression sleeve to prevent lymphedema.
  • Avoid grapefruit and echinacea, both of which impede the effects of chemotherapy.
  • If you’re taking tamoxifen, avoid soy as it can stop tamoxifen’s ability to halt tumor growth.
  • Sign up for a meal organizing system like MealTrain.com so that your friends and family can help you in providing for your food needs.
  • Sign up for one of the dozens of free spas or retreat vacations available to breast cancer survivors.

How The Breast Cancer Checklist Helps Patients & Loved Ones:

This is the book every woman diagnosed with breast cancer wishes they had. It is a series of checklists that helps women manage every aspect of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. It also contains fill-in forms for keeping information — medical, insurance, personal — organized during the course of treatment.

This book is also a wonderful resource for families and caregivers who are dealing with someone who has been diagnosed. It offers people easy ways to help out and empowers women by giving them knowledge and a sense of control over their daily choices.

How our Book Helps Doctors:

This is a book that doctors can hand out to their patients that will alleviate much of the patient anxiety associated with a breast cancer diagnosis. The fill-in forms (with everything from medical to insurance details) will also help keep patients better organized throughout the medical experience. The book can also be a time-saver for physicians, as many of the questions that patients may have forgotten the answers to can be easily reviewed.

Additionally, this book can be the key for a deeper engagement between patients and their doctors. Doctors can ask more specific questions related to their patients and have a better understanding of how the patient is mentally and physically managing their treatment. Thus, this can be a tool for increasing patient satisfaction and the quality of care offered.

Why 10,000?

I’m trying to raise $10,000 in order to cover the cost of the book’s publication next month. You can read more about the book and see the complete table of contents and several actual pages of the book on our website. Thank you.
